Abandoned Ontario asylum is about to get a new lease on life

An abandoned asylum in Ontario might be getting a new lease on life soon following years of neglect and deterioration.

The abandoned Century Manor is a historic structure built for the shuttered Hamilton Asylum for the Insane on the Mountain brow.

Located just off West 5th Street, the Victorian Gothic manor was built in 1884 as the East House for the asylum and closed to the public in 1995.

Since its closure, heritage advocates have continued to express concern about losing the historic property to residential development or demolition by neglect.

The crumbling manor has been further deteriorated by routine break-ins and vandalization.

In 2018, Mohawk College made a deal with the Liberal provincial government at the time to transform the gothic asylum into a student residence and pledged $9 million to restore it.

However, the proposal was axed later that year when the new PC government backed out of the deal.

According to The Spectator, the province has now struck a deal to sell the historic land to long-term home developer Schlegel Villages, with nonprofit Indwell joining in as a partner to transform the vacant building into 40 supportive housing apartments.

While the province has still not officially announced the details involving the future of the Victorian Gothic building — as well as the 500 acres of property it's nestled on — a formal announcement is expected to come in due time.
