Chef behind award-winning restaurants opening something new in Toronto

The Michelin chef and hospitality team behind Toronto restaurants MIMI Chinese and Sunny's Chinese are going in a completely new direction with their latest restaurant, set to open in Toronto this weekend.

After earning accolades for his two hugely popular Toronto Chinese restaurants — including a Michelin guide recommendation in the case of MIMI — Executive Chef David Schwartz, alongside his hospitality company, Big Hug Hospitality, are gearing up to unleash their latest creation on the Toronto food landscape.

While you may figure Schwartz and Big Hug Hospitality are following the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it," approach and continuing the tradition of putting out some of the Toronto's best Chinese food — their latest project, Linny's couldn't diverge further.

Opening at 176 Ossington this weekend, Linny's will be a combination of classic steakhouse and old-world deli, combining elements of mid-century elegance with down-to-earth comfort.

With a menu that will feature steakhouse staples, from dry aged steaks to caesar salad and fries, every inch of Linny's will apparently be geared towards delivering the culinary version of, quite appropriately, a big hug.

The name of the restaurant itself is steeped in comfort — the name Linny is a tribute to Schwartz's mother, Linda, and the menu derived from family recipes and cooking traditions passed down over generations.

The physical space, designed by Jack Lipson of IPSO Studios, was also inspired by Linda's legacy and Schwartz's childhood memories, featuring leopard print furniture, pictures of her handwritten recipes and courderoy booths that give the space a feel that's at once homey and utterly chic.

They've even partnered with Ossington neighbour, Tiger of Sweden, to design the uniforms that'll be worn by staff at the restaurant. See what I mean by chic?

Linny's officially opens for business on Friday, Sept. 21, but reservations are open now through the restaurant's website.

Linny's is open Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. until late.
