Restaurant chain taking over iconic location in Toronto's Chinatown

A Chinese restaurant chain is opening up a new location in the space that once housed Toronto's iconic Goldstone Noodle.

It was the end of an era last month when Chinatown stalwart, Goldstone Noodle, shut its doors after 30 years.

Since 1994, the restaurant had been a go-to in the neighbourhood, not just for traditional Cantonese dishes but also as a backdrop for a number of TV and movie productions thanks to its old-school appearance.

Shortly after Goldstone closed down for good on July 7, though, signage has gone up around the building at 266 Spadina announcing its impending takeover by Chinese food chain, Mom's Pan Fried Bun.

Specializing in fluffy steamed buns stuffed with the likes of braised pork alongside messy-delicious soup dumplings, Mom's debuted with its first Toronto location on Dundas West in early 2023, and has since opened two more locations in Newmarket and Markham in the months following.

In addition to buns and dumplings, their menu also boasts a selection of both contemporary and traditional Chinese dishes, from saucy fried chicken wings to pumpkin pie with red bean paste, so their fourth location surely be a welcome addition among the innumerable dim sum and noodle shops along Spadina.

Mom's Pan Fried Bun tells blogTO that the opening date and details about their newest location are under wraps for the time being, as they're hard at work preparing the space to serve up scores of supple buns and dumplings, but that they'll be breaking the news soon, so stay tuned to their social media for the latest updates.

With the restaurant's current Toronto location exactly a kilometre away from the new Spadina spot, the question lingers as to whether they'll be abandoning the original location in favour of the iconic new spot — but, with the chain clutching details close to their chest, only time can tell what the future holds.

In the meantime, though, Mom's Pan Fried Bun is still up and operating business as usual from their location at 185 Dundas West, so you can stop by and get a taste of what's to come.
