Ontario cops crack down on problematic mall parking lot with over 70 charges laid

Peel Regional Police were out in force over the weekend, cracking down on unruly behaviour in the parking lot of a busy Mississauga mall.

Police report that they carried out a "Strategic Enforcement Operation" at the mall this weekend in response to "ongoing community safety concerns."

Peel Regional Police report that "numerous" officers attended the mall, located in the area of Eglinton Avenue West and Ridgeway Drive, resulting in over 40 traffic stops and more than 70 charges laid on the first night of the enforcement alone.

After a particularly eventful Friday night where multiple vehicles were impounded by police, officers claim to have witnessed much less illegal activity by the second night of the operation.

"Tonight, I'm very pleased to announce that we're seeing more compliance and far fewer violations observed by officers," said Peel Regional Police Constable Tyler Bell-Morena.

"This is telling us that our presence here is having an impact," said Bell-Morena.

Ridgeway Plaza has proven to be a problematic congregation point for young locals to party, show off their modded cars, and, shoot off fireworks, and, in a few recorded instances, duke it out in bloody brawls.

While the mall has stood out as a hotspot of the local food scene, boasting an impressive collection of cuisines from across the globe, locals have also identified it as a "hazard" for nearby residents.

Several people have expressed concerns about the mall parking lot in social media posts, like one Reddit user who ranted on the platform last year about the conditions faced by area residents, writing, "Enough is enough."
