It has officially been confirmed that this weekend will be a long weekend - for some Canadians. 

Speaking to reporters today in New Brunswick, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that Monday, Sept. 19 will be a federal holiday and official day of mourning.

"We have also chosen to move forward with a federal holiday on Monday. We will be working with the provinces and the territories to try and see that we're aligned on this, there are still details to be worked out," he said. 

This comes as Queen Elizabeth II it set to be buried 10 days after her death, with the holiday an opportunity for Canadians to mourn and honour the monarch.

Trudeau said he would work with provinces and territories to nail down the details of this holiday.

Federal holidays usually mean all nonessential federal offices and banks will be closed for the entire day.

However, unless the provinces also declare a holiday, this means only federally-regulated workers will have a long weekend.
