Toronto feels tremors from Virginia Earthquake

Toronto just felt the earth shake as a 5.8 earthquake near Richmond, Virginia sent tremors far to the north. The majority of reports so far indicate only slight rumbling in Toronto — the type of thing that feels weird but isn't actually dangerous. Although the earthquake is reported to have been felt for minutes nearer to its epicentre, in Toronto it lasted for about five to 10 seconds (note: some have reported a longer duration).

Update (2:10pm):

The quake has been updated to a 5.9.

Let us know what effects you felt in Toronto in the comments section.

Update (2:15):

  • CNN reports that the earthquake was felt in Washington DC, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Martha's Vineyard, and Toronto.
  • A number of reports from Torontonians on Twitter have the duration of the tremors lasting beyond 30 seconds.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep, which relatively speaking isn't that deep.
  • Toronto Police have confirmed that there are no reports of injuries or damage at this time (which makes sense because the tremors were fairly minor up here).

Update (2:35pm):

Given that the tremors were so minor in Toronto, we're going to move to reaction to the quake, most of which is on the lighter side.
