Toronto commuters have it the worst in Canada, according to a survey released today by Statistics Canada. The average commute time GTA residents face is 33 minutes, slightly longer than the 31 minutes faced by those in the Montreal area.

Based on a survey of how Canadians use their time, the national average for commuting in 2010 was 26 minutes, with larger cities unsurprisingly experiencing longer travel times. For sake of context, commuters in the New York City area face a 38 minute trip to work on average, which is the longest in the States.

None of this is terribly surprising. This little tidbit, on the other hand, might be: 85 per cent of those surveyed replied that they were satisfied with the duration of their commute. Perhaps this general lack of frustration comes from low expectations or perhaps it's because Canadians are just such mild-mannered people, but apparently people aren't quite as bothered by congestion as we're often told.
