Your Toronto morning news roundup for Wednesday September 24th, 2008:

The city is abuzz about the future of transit after the results of the much-anticipated Metrolinx study (PDF) were delivered yesterday. But it's being met with serious criticism so far - especially regarding the lack of a comprehensive strategy to pay for the many ambitious, proposed projects; and for not taking enough into account expected population growth in the regions surrounding Toronto. Without addressing these critical, challenging issues, it seems like any committee could have dreamed up a similar plan in 30 days.

Remember the major sting operation back in June that netted police a number of arrests and was touted as being a big blow to the MS-13 gang? Apparently it's in danger of falling apart at the seams in court.

Want to get a university degree for free (no, not the fake kind or small engine repair kind you can order online or on infomercials)? All you have to do is graduate from high school with a 95% average and maintain an 85% average in your university studies, and you won't pay a dime. The catch? You have to move to Thunder Bay.

A three-alarm blaze completely destroyed a home in the Annex yesterday. The owners had just put in over $100,000 in renovations and were hoping to move in soon. It's a good thing no one was hurt and no surrounding homes were severely affected.

Hopefully fans of Oasis in New York City and in Europe aren't "looking back in anger" at Toronto's Virgin Festival, where a spectator ran onto the stage, and pushed Noel Gallagher to the floor (on top of a speaker, actually). Official word appearing on the band's web page is that the incident resulted in three of his ribs being broken and dislodged. Shows in the Big Apple and three in Europe have had to be postponed as a result.

Rogers continues to annoy me every morning. As I scan for news items to include in the Morning Brew, I keep encountering their new, aggressive strategy to force online CityNews readers to click through and visit Chatelaine and Maclean's in order to finish reading stories.
