She's one of ours, all right

Born on the southbound platform at Wellesley station - with the assistance of a nearby good samaritan, no less - young Mary Kim is about as Toronto as it gets.

Doesn't this stuff only happen on sitcoms? Or at the very least, haven't sitcoms taught us by now that you should never, ever take the subway to the hospital when you're in labour?

I for one am just glad that at least one of those perennial "passenger assistance emergencies" you always hear about on Monday morning wasn't the usual expected misery of somebody jumping onto the tracks. Just the reverse, actually.

Nevertheless, a sense of order is returned to my Toronto experience by the eyewitness reports of the complete obliviousness of the TTC staff - who hustled the first train out of the station as soon as mother-to-be Sun Hee Paik had been taken off the train, and then brought in the next train, all while Paik was in the throes of delivery on the platform.

For passengers emerging from that second train to witness the birth in progress, Monday mornings may never be the same.

Welcome to Toronto, Mary!
